This dictionary allows you to look up words even when you are not sure of the spelling.  It also includes a thesaurus.

Cambridge Dictionaries Online

This dictionary provides sample sentences as well as complete definitions.

 

Elements of Style:

This style guide by William Strunk, Jr. is an excellent resource for any writer.  Strunk covers the Elementary Rules of Usage as well as the Elementary Principles of Composition. 

Guide to Grammar and Writing

This excellent guide covers skills required at the Sentence Level, the Paragraph Level, and finally the Essay Level. 

 

A Handbook of Rhetorical Devices

This online book by Robert Harris of Vanguard University of Southern California contains definitions and examples of more than sixty traditional rhetorical devices, all of which can be useful in improving the effectiveness and clarity of writing.

The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing

Michael Harvey presents a thinking guide rather than just another writing guide.  As a thinking guide, this resource offers a framework for analyzing essays.  It includes a full-text search.

Roberts' Rhetoric for College Writers

Each of the ten chapters of Roberts' online book deals with the writing process, emphasizing the importance of reading critically and applying that ability to become a better writer.  Roberts provides excellent explanations as well as sample passages to analyze.
